As our contest tour comes to an end for the year and I look back at all of the laughs we had over the hot summer on the smoker. I'm reminded of the new additions to the trailer that made life a little easier. I’m reminded of the new friends we made from across the US. And we’ll always tell the stories of eating the “QUAD” at Cotham’s Mercantile, the Blue Angles stopping by our site, the addition of team shirts, the hundred degree heat and Randy trimming his first brisket. But most importantly in our old age we were able to recoup from the hangovers, a cut finger, someone swallowing a chicken bone and the swarm of killer bees. We survived all that and no one was seriously hurt.
We did not win any contests again this year but we did receive calls in all four categories as well as our first call at the American Royal. Moreover our skills continue getting better in that our ability to reproduce consistent results is easier and it is not as much of a guessing game. Both our chicken and ribs scores were averaging over 160 before poor scores at the Royal. And getting back to the basics in pork and brisket yielded us respectable numbers in our last contests. So the team is not without optimism going into the winter.
We were also able to do several fun cooks this summer. They were highlighted by our participation in BBQ for the Troops at Ft Des Moines. And we drove to Parker Colorado to cook for my Aunt and Uncle’s “Porsches and Pastries” party.
It truly was a great 2010 with a lot of laughs from spending time with good friends. If you see me at home smoking meat this winter in my coveralls and winter hat, stop and chat awhile.
